Second-hand yet still first class: new addition for Universal Cranes is a refurbished Liebherr LTR 11200
Telescopic crawler crane demonstrates its capabilities during the modernisation of a level crossing
Long-term partnership with Liebherr: shared values, trust and product quality convince customer

Ehingen (Donau), (Germany), 5 March 2025 – Universal Cranes has enhanced its fleet with a refurbished Liebherr LTR 11200 crane, showcasing its commitment to modernizing infrastructure. Despite being pre-owned, this crane exemplifies first-class quality and performance.
The telescopic crawler crane has already demonstrated its capabilities, notably during the modernization of a railway crossing in Brisbane, where it effectively installed bridge girders, overcoming the complexities of a significant infrastructure project.
In response to the increasing demand for efficient equipment for short-term heavy lifting tasks, Universal Cranes has strategically added the pre used Liebherr LTR 11200 to its fleet. Mark Happer, General Manager at Universal Cranes, emphasizes the necessity for lifting larger and heavier loads on casual short-term hires, alongside the crane's ability to relocate without the need for derigging. This versatile crane allows Universal Cranes to support a diverse range of applications across various sectors, from infrastructure to industrial projects. Happer particularly values the crane's robust telescopic boom and adaptable boom options. Ben Smith, National Operations Manager, further explains that the LTR 11200’s design enables it to operate fully equipped on challenging terrain, with the pedestal mode facilitating jobs without relocating the crawlers to the site.

As an all-terrain model, the 1,200-tonne crane merges maximum lifting capacity with the longest telescopic boom globally. Its 100-metre-long telescopic boom, Y-guying, and rapid-setup lattice extensions were originally engineered for wind turbine erection. The LTR 11200 boasts significantly shorter setup times compared to traditional lattice boom cranes and requires minimal counterweights and space for boom erection. Its diverse driving configurations allow for economical transportation worldwide. Happer notes that the crawler crane occupies less installation space than its lattice boom counterparts, making it a more efficient choice.
The LTR 11200's successful deployment in a Brisbane railway crossing modernization project involved the installation of nine pre-cast concrete girders, each measuring 35 metres in length and weighing 76 tonnes. Equipped with a 28-metre main boom, a 36-metre luffing jib, and 182 tonnes of ballast, the crane operated under the auspices of Bielby Hull Joint Venture. Patrick Silver, Projects and Heavy Lift Division Manager at Universal Cranes, highlights the extensive support provided in assembly and lifting planning, which was crucial for executing the complex project amidst ongoing railway operations. This endeavor required meticulous preparation and collaboration with key stakeholders over several months.

To mitigate risks associated with the necessary rail closures, the bridge girders were stored on-site prior to installation, ensuring that lifts could be completed without delay during the critical time frame. Silver remarks, “The LTR 11200 proved to be the ideal crane solution for this task, unparalleled in its load capacity class and capable of maneuvering around the construction site. Despite the limited assembly area, the crane was operational in an adjacent yard, well away from the rail corridor and roadway.” Ultimately, the operation was completed successfully within the planned two-day timeframe.

Universal Cranes boasts a fleet of 278 cranes across Australia, New Zealand, and Guam, with 47 sourced from Liebherr. “Our experience with Liebherr has consistently been marked by excellent service and support. The foundation of our long-term partnership is built on shared values and trust, motivating us to invest in an overhauled LTR 11200 from Ehingen. We have confidence that Liebherr's pre-owned cranes are meticulously reconditioned, maintaining the high quality we expect from new models,” shares Ben Smith. He further reflects on the reconditioning process at the Ehingen facility, stating, “We were thoroughly impressed by the factory and the expertise of the staff. It was evident that the entire team, from the project manager to the technicians, dedicated their passion and commitment to their work.”
