Yesterday (Monday 22nd July) a new Liebherr LTC owned by the UK market leaders Ainscough crane hire went up in flames on the A38 in Plymouth. The crane is a complete right off but lucky enough there is no injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Liebherr and Ainscough and although crane fires are not uncommon it will be good if they publish the conclusion to help prevent from happening to others.
As you can see all the damage is concentrated to the rear of the machine which indicates the fire started in the engine bay, which may be down to a fuel or oil leak. Ainscoughs being the UKs largest mobile crane hire company probably has one of the highest standards of maintenance within the UK crane industry so will definitely rule out lack of maintenance.
